It all began over a decade ago...

In 1990, an art therapy program was started at TII as a means to encourage participants to express and communicate their inner-most feelings through the creation of wonderful works of art.
In 2000, TII purchased and remodeled an old Montgomery Ward department store in Xenia to be used for administrative offices. The entrance of the building opened up into phenomenally high ceilings, providing inspiration for the concept of the Inner I Gallery. The name Inner I was selected to convey an essential and inherent message: artwork produced by individuals with disabilities comes from within their HEARTS and SOULS! The Inner I Gallery was the first permanent art
gallery in Ohio dedicated to displaying the artwork of individuals with developmental disabilities. Since 2002, the gallery has also hosted the VSA (Very Special Arts) Ohio Accessible Expressions Exhibit on an annual basis. This touring exhibit features the work of many Ohio artists with various disabilities.
A gift shop was opened to sell products featuring selected pieces of artwork from the gallery, including note cards, prints, t-shirts, calendars, etc. In 2008, the Inner I, along with Partners For Community Living of Dayton, Ohio, began hosting a new regional art show for artists with developmental disabilities, Art & Soul Exhibit. The exhibit is now in its sixth year of coordination and attracts nearly 250 entries from 22 counties in southwestern Ohio.
During the last 22 years, hundreds of individuals have been impacted by the Inner I Gallery and its initiatives. Now artists can make new creations in courses offered through TII's habilitation program, Creative Community Connections. Inner I artists and their amazing creations have been an inspiration to many. Several of the original pieces have won awards and recognition at state and local art shows including VSA Ohio Accessible Expressions and county fairs. Some have even
placed in international competitions. We at TII and the Inner I Gallery are very proud of all that has been accomplished by those we serve.
